Problem
Pressure ulcers represent a major healthcare challenge, affecting 2.5 million patients annually in the U.S. They begin as tissue damage beneath the skin caused by prolonged pressure and can progress into large open wounds if untreated. At all stages, patients experience significant discomfort and pain, ranging from constant aching in early stages to severe, debilitating pain in advanced cases where deep tissue and bone become exposed. Tragically, complications from pressure ulcers result in 60,000 deaths each year in the U.S. Superman actor Christopher Reeve is one of the people who died from this condition.
